An Important Open Letter from an Insurer

An Important Open Letter from an Insurer

To whom this may concern,

Firstly, let me introduce myself, I am the founder and Director of Sparrow Insurance, I have worked within the specialised area of insurance, one of these areas is insuring laser technicians.

I have been at the forefront in a number of changes within the industry, in respect to safety and standards for the ongoing protection of not only our clients but more importantly their clients, on a national level. Ensuring that the standards we have set not only have assisted our clients.

Of relevance is the standard recommendation contained in the AS/NZS Standard 4173: 2018 Safe use of lasers and intense light sources in health care where all laser users are required to receive laser safety education. This Standard
was approved by a Joint Technical Committee that included representation from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency and Therapeutic Goods Administration amongst others.

To obtain insurance, there is a requirement for an adequate standard of qualifications and specific guidelines are be followed to ensure that in the event a situation did arise, the claim would be reviewed by the insurer.

There used to be quite a significantly high ratio of claims within the laser treatment sector of our clients, so in speaking with our underwriter, the decision was made that for us to provide insurance for a laser technician, a laser safety certificate was mandatory for obtaining insurance through us.

The positive outcomes we have seen since introducing this standard is a drop in situations that may have lead to a claim less litigation. With the introduction of mandatory laser safety certificates - the knowledge base of our clients has been increased, the implications of them causing serious damage to a client is minimalised, and the ability for the laser industry to now obtain cover for insurance with lower premiums and excesses.

I wish you all the very best.

Sue
